Cervical and lumbar disc prolapse are common spinal conditions that occur when the soft center of a spinal disc bulges and presses on nearby nerves in the neck or lower back. Both conditions share common causes, such as aging and strain, but they affect different parts of the body, each presenting distinct symptoms and treatment paths.
Cervical Disc Prolapse (Neck)
Location: Occurs in the neck vertebrae, most often at the C5-C6 or C6-C7 levels.
Symptoms: Causes neck pain, stiffness, and sharp or shooting pain that travels down the shoulder, arm, or fingers.
Effects: May lead to tingling, numbness, or weak grip strength in the hands.
Lumbar Disc Prolapse (Lower Back)
Location: Occurs in the lower back vertebrae, frequently affecting the lower nerve roots.
Symptoms: Triggers lower back pain and sciatica, which is characterized by sharp, burning pain shooting down the buttock, thigh, and calf.
Effects: Can cause numbness, tingling, or foot drop, which is difficulty in lifting the front part of the foot.
